We had an older Canon Powershot A95...and it lasted quite a while..it had a pretty hard life...so we upgraded to the A630..it does all the same stuff. It has a higher resolution and a better zoom. It has one less feature on the turnstyle, but it is not missed. The one thing that we can do with this camera that we couldn't w/the A95 is zoom in while you are taking video..that is a great feature. The camera also takes 4 AA batteries, it is great to get rechargables. It is a little heavier and bulkier than most digital cameras out there..but it is a little lighter than the A95...and still fits into a purse. The A630 does take an SD card where the A95 took a Compact Flash card..so you can't use your old memory...but SD's aren't that expensive. I bought this camera directly from Kodak to replace a Kodak EasyShare C613 - I also own a larger 6 year old Kodak EasyShare as well.

The Kodak C613 was a good little camera that I bought for about $75 on sale 2 years ago - I wasn't expecting the best being as we only paid $75 for it - figured it would be good to take with us when we went places where the larger one would be too bulky to carry with us or for my husband to take along with him on hunting trips - figuring if it wound up broken due to our own negligence we would not be out a lot of money. It served us well for 2 years before the lens cover broke...

When it came to replacing it - we wanted the same - easy to tote around, under $100 with a few different options. Figuring we have had good luck with cameras from Kodak in the past I bought this camera directly from Kodak and paid just under $100 (had a coupon code for % off).

Out of the box it worked well - it took a little while to go through and see all the different scenes and see how it works...there are a few features that were not on the C613 that i really like - such as the Panoramic option - a very cool feature...and the red eye reduction flash does work great...

I have had some trouble at time getting good clear pictures - even with proper lighting sometimes it appears the camera is in focus and when I look back at the picture it is not.

Video is decent for $100 camera - don't expect the best quality and if anyone is expecting great quality video from a camera then you shouldn't be relying on one that costs under $100.

The BIGGEST problem I have having is actually getting the pictures to show up sometimes...One of the things I do like is that you connect the camera to your computer via a USB cable - However I go to load picture up into the Kodak software I have and while I can see the picture as a thumbnail - when I go to bring it up it gives me an error message saying the "file exists but might be damaged" - if I try and open it in another photo program (windows picture viewer, HP image) I get some sort of error message as well...when I go to properties for the picture it shows it is saved in a .jpeg format - it just won't open in anything...

I have tried 2 different SD cards and pictures on both have done this...In fact I opened a new SD card and took a few pictures of my girls - reviewed them on the camera - but when I went to load it up I got an error message that the SD card wasn't formatted and it erased the pictures on the SD card to format it...that sort of pissed me off

But today was really the last straw as I only took one picture of my kids together for Halloween and guess what is the only picture that won't load...I can see a thumbnail on my computer - but can't open it...I am HIGHLY upset at this and because of this I am going to be looking at returning it to Kodak and getting my money back...

For the money, I really expected more from this camera. Even my tiny Nikon micro-handheld camera goes down to an f3.3; and this Fuji with the nice big lens only goes down to 3.5? C'mon. Most superzoom cameras these days go down to f2.8, which provides much better image quality by allowing lower ISO and faster shutter speeds. The lack of adjustablity in the aperature is disappointing; you really can only choose either a 3.5 or 7.0 (nothing in between). When at maximum zoom, even on a bright sunny day, image quality is sub-par. Image distortion is apparent and there is a very noticeable "purple fringe" effect. Image sharpness at this zoom level is also not as sharp as you would expect from a $280 camera. These are my biggest complaints. But wouldn't you consider these MAJOR FLAWS; I mean, why would you even buy a superzoom camera at this pricepoint if you didn't want nice looking pictures?

The camera is comfortable to hold, and is a nice compact size, compared to other cameras in it's class. It's features compare nicely to the competition. The 15x zoom is nice; unless you're using a tripod, more zoom than that would be difficult to use. The flash is acceptable, if a bit harsh. Macro mode is easy to use, and movie mode does work as advertised. The menus are sub-par.

I like it because it gives me pleasure when I whip it out of my bag and take a picture. I don't keep it as a conversation piece. I don't care about party convo or what other people think about my little camera. I'm a camera lover and get a kick out of this camera, it's as simple as that. I have more serious cameras in addition to this mini that take better pictures. I like the size and weight, it's easy to keep in my bag for quick pictures when I'm running around town. I'm not one for cell phone cameras, so this is a good compromise. The pictures are grainy when blown up, but sometimes I like that effect. The colors are sometimes wonky, esp. the blues (too blue), but I also like that effect at times, too. This type of distortion in photos can be accidentally beautiful. It's not extremely well-made. I keep a small piece of duck tape over the memory card door because it kept popping open. Also, the little rubber cover that protects the socket for the USB cord keeps popping open. Minox could improve these things in future versions (are you listening Minox?). Is it overpriced? Hell, yes. It's a personal thing, this camera. You'll know it if you need it. People who are skeptical or wondering should probably pass on it.

(Oh, and I have the flash. It works. It gives off some pretty harsh light, but if you shade it just right with your hand you can get some decent indoor pictures. Bottom Line: Great value for a quality feeling budget compact camera. Image quality is fine, I see no problems with smaller prints up to ISO 800, this is far better than my previous point and shoot that was half the resolution. My favorite features are the weather sealed buttons (the camera isn't weather sealed, get the Z33wp for that), but the buttons are rubber covered and liquid can't get in around them, and my other favorite feature is the high frame update on the LCD. As long as you set the menu option for high performance, the rear LCD updates very rapidly, any motion is updated instantly. This is much improved over most of the competition, but no reviews I see mention this.

Some people are complaining about the quality of the images, but either they have a bad sample or are just viewing the images at 100% on a computer monitor. Prints are fine. I will comment that the rear LCD is sometimes grainy appearing, but the final images are great. This is because the rear LCD has a high frame update, about 60 hz, and it needs to set the sensitivity very high in low light in order to show you an image at that rate, so the display comes grainy. When you take the picture it is fine.

Overall this is a pretty average performing camera that is inexpensive. It has a semi manual mode for setting your own ISO, EV compensation, but it lacks a few other options. The aperture just uses a couple values, and can't be selected manually. If you can pick this up for about a hundred bucks it is a bargain. I so much looked forward to this camera. I ordered it for our upcoming 10 day cruise at a.o. Aruba and Curacao. Looked forward to taking underwater pictures in Aruba where we were going to snorkle. The pictures I took up untill the moment the camera stopped working were saved so I do have the underwater pictures with the fish and the shipwreck. I believe that the Canon Powershot D10 underwater camera is not at all waterproof or in my case I received a 'Monday morning' example. With GPS and wireless, this is the future of cameras and many electronics. It is easy to use and takes very good quality photos for a compact. And of course it has GPS and Wifi/Bluetooth. The touchscreen is large and is very easy to use (the easiest I've ever used).

I'd like to give this a 4.5 stars rating since the issues I had with it are minor: 1) the GPS can be a bit slow getting the initial fix and 2) the touchscreen is a bit sensitive sometimes causing it to bring up menus when you don't want to, and 3) I have a preference for regular SD cards verses micro SD.

I also bought this camera and experienced poor battery life. After reading the reviews I was ready to box it up and ship it back. At the last minute I decided to give it another try and work the batterys. I bought 2 each of every battery that said digital camera. I also measured the short circuit current of each type of battery. What I found is this camera (and every camera that uses AA's) needs high current NOT high capacity.The flash is essentially a dead short. When the engineers built the bigger zoom (5X) they made the flash bigger. The bigger flash it put a hugh load on the batterys. The best batterys that I found were the Hybrios (new style NiMh that holds it charge for a year another benefit). The Sony high current also worked. When I tested it with fresh charged batterys I gave up after 80 consecutive forced flashs in a row and I got tired of testing. Previously I could get about ten flashes before the batterys failed. This included alkaline as they do not like being shorted. So bottom line is you need about 8 amps short circuit current to make the camera live. Six amps short circuit does not work and the age of the cells counts for a lot. This camera stopped taking clear pictures for us in 8 months. Since it was a very inexpensive camera it wasn't a total shock and the good news was that it was covered under warranty. HOWEVER, dealing with Samsung trying to get it fixed, was nightmarish. They sent the fixed camera to the wrong person's home and I received someone else's camera. This is the truly amazing part: It took over 6 weeks to get the problem rectified. And during those weeks, I spoke with numerous customer service people who never knew what was happening in other Samsung departments. The reps couldn't just call them either. It always required emails and time for the depts to respond. No one was ever held responsible for fixing the problem. Sometimes my calls to Samsung trying to follow up on this were dropped. Anyway, this is the short version and as you can see, if you buy this low end camera, you risk dealing with Samsung and THAT is just too risky if you value your time. Buy a camera from a camera company like Canon. Our higher quality Canon was repaired once in 7 years and without issue. I have been looking for a compact all around point and shoot camera for awhile now. I have used multiple cameras in the last few months, and I think I have found my favorite. I'm not an expert in terms of color reproduction, or other details aspects of the final photo, but I don't see much to complain about in terms of photo quality.

PROS:
Ultra fast focus. This baby can focus and lock on in < 1 sec. This ensure that you'll be able to capture those timeless moments in a blink of an eye.

Fast startup. The startup of 0.7s is true, BUT only if you are in Auto Mode and Single Shot mode with AF/Center Focus. If you are in another mode or continuous/BSS, face detect, the camera takes almost 5 seconds before you can take your first show. Although I'm a little bit disapointed that the startup of the camera is limited to a very specific mode, I use Auto/Single/AF 99% of the time so I'm not too concerned.

Easy, intuitive controls. I didn't have to read the manual, and I can get around easily.'

High ISO modes, up to 6400. Although I would not recommend anything greater than 800 (or even 400 if you can help it), just have a capability just in case is nice.

Fast 5x wide angle lens. This lens has a pretty standard wide angle lens, 28mm, but the nice thing is that is also a fast lens - maximum aperture of 2.7. Helps a bit in low light. 5x is more than what basic P&S have (usually 3x).

Extremely compact and solid. Its pretty small, but still has a good feel in your hand. Easily slips into your pocket.


CONS

Picture quality is just SO-SO. There hasn't been many compact 12mp P&S that excel in picture quality. While its not terrible, its not something to be excited about. Its comparable to any of the SD800-SD960, SD1200 cameras.

ISO800 is barely usable, and anything above that I don't recommend. Of course, I've been spoiled by DSLRs, but I was hoping for better.

Battery drains pretty quickly. I don't get the 200+ shots that Nikon says I can get. I get maybe 100? Of course, I use flash sometimes, I replay the photo's quite a bit, turn it on/off a lot. Maybe that 270 shots per battery is 270 continuous shots? I don't know. Get a second one in my opinion.

This camera takes a while to write to the SD flash card. On my previous Canon SD800 and Panasonic ZR1, I was able to take a picture, and flip it to the playback mode instantly. Now, it takes about 1.5 seconds to write to the card, before I can enable the playback mode. Slightly annoying.


So, who is this camera for? Its for the amateur photographer who needs a fast, compact, basic Point and Shoot that will get the job done. I would recommend this over the Canon SD1200, SD800-SD960.
